WINONA, Minn. – A former church fund-raiser who swindled $115,000 by writing checks to herself was granted probation. Amy Mae Thorn, 43, had pleaded guilty to three counts of swindling in a plea deal. The deal dropped other counts and included an agreement that she would pay back the money. The criminal complaint alleged that Thorn wrote 131 checks to herself for $115,000 between January 2016 and October 2017. In those 22 months she was at St. Martin’s Lutheran School and in charge of a fundraising program. The program involved gift cards at a reduced rate. The judge told Thorn that she would go to jail if she reneges on restitution.
