VIOLA, Minn. – A Lewiston man in a party of 13 hunters was shot in a leg by a fellow hunter. The victim was not named by Olmsted County deputies, who investigated. They said the man was well enough to drive 20 miles home to Lewiston. His wife took him to the Winona hospital with what’s called a “through and through” wound to his right calf. The incident was Saturday afternoon north of Viola near County Road 24 and 65th Street Northeast.  Deputies said seven people were driving deer toward the victim and five others. “Deer were running everywhere” when several of the hunters opened fire, deputies were told. In all, 48 shots were fired. Who fired the wounding shot? The hunting party said nobody will ever know.
