WINONA, Minn. – Lorraine Margaret (Kallas) Redig, 92, who opened her home to  foreign students and more than 20 foster children, died peacefully at Benedictine-St. Anne nursing home. She traveled to Brazil and Peru to visit overseas families whom she housed in Winona. She was a land stewardship crusader and went to the Philippines and Puerto Rico to research farm crisis issues. She testified before Congress about farm issues. She enjoyed growing unusual plants, such as winter hardy kiwi and corkscrew willow trees. She made canes from the oddly curled branches.
