ROCHESTER, Minn. – The City Council may be on the cusp of renewing the 0.75% city sales tax. Without periodic renewal, the tax disappears. The tax has generated $12 million to $13 million a year since 2012 and more in recent years with incremental increases. It’s possible that the Council may choose to begin a process to increase the tax to fund street reconstruction, affordable housing, and flood control and water quality systems. A hike would require approval of local voters and then only if the Legislature approves it as a ballot issue.
