League delays fall sports except golf, tennis

BLOOMINGIN, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decided to postpone most fall games to spring, including football, volleyball, soccer or cross country. Golf and tennis will be allowed this because they are considered less in terms of coronavirus contagion, so long as campus, state and NCAA health directives are followed. Paul Pribbenow, chair of the league’s Presidents’ Council, said: “We know how much our student-athletes want to compete and how important athletics are to each of our campuses, but we need to put ourselves in a position to return to play as safely as possible.” As a conference member, Saint Mary’s islittle affected. Saint Mary’s doesn’t field a men’s or women’s golf team. It does field men’s and women’s tennis teams, but there are no matches scheduled until January.
