ONALASKA, Wis. – Two men ice-fishing near Fisherman’s Road on the Black River off French Island, both old enough to know better, fell through thin ice. Bystanders rescued them. This was about 3:30 p.m When firefighters arrived, both were on shore. One was taken to hospital to be checked over.
Tips for ice-fishing
Game Warden Matt Groppi: Whenever water is pooling on the ice it’s a sign that that ice is thinning – melting actually. Be equipped with:
> A spud to check ice thickness. At least four inches generally is safe for walking. Six is better.
> A whistle and a charged cell phone.
> Personal flotation devices and a rope.
> A thermometer to monitor air temperature. Above 32 degrees be extra careful. In the 40s, get out of there.
Also: Tell friends and family know where you are going and when you will be back.
