WINONA, Minn. – With the annual student field trip to Whitewater State Park put on hold a second year because of Covid protocols, the staff at the Winona Learning Center improvised in-house. It was a blast, so to speak. The main event was a model rocket project with the aerospace class and astronauts club. Every rocket launched, albeit a minor problem with one engine. Teacher Joel Bruels resolved the problem quickly, and the errant rocket launched as well. The eyes of every student from nearby Jefferson Elementary School, who were holding class outside, followed the rockets skyward. The day was more than rockets. Students planted seeds with parent-educator Lynnea Pfohl, did early morning yoga, learned to crochet, played old school video games, did whatever they wanted in the art room, sang karaoke, and played one rowdy game of kickball.

Onward, upward. Learning Center coordinator Samantha Wagner and student Amerie Williams show off their model rockets as part of a celebration to the end of the school year.
