MADISON, Wis. – Even with best-case scenarios, the University of Wisconsin faces deep financial troubles, Chancellor Rebecca Blank said. One variable is whether the 7,400 admitted freshmen show up in during the coronavirus pandemic. So will they? “I will believe this when I actually see everyone on campus and registered come the first of September,” Blank told members of a Rotary Club at an online meeting. Every no-show is lost tuition revenue, Blank said. There also are questions about how deep state budget cuts will be. The university system already has been cut $49 million out of a $70 million reduction across all of state government ordered by Governor Tony Evers. An additional $250 million cut is being considered by the governor. Another unknown, she said, is whether the Legislature gives the university the authority to borrow money.
