One-ups rival Daily News with intuitive layout
WINONA, Minn. – The Winona Post has launched a device-friendly online version of the paper that lends itself to 24/7 updating that readers can carry in a pocket. Editor Chris Rogers said the ground-up redesign packages stories and features more intuitively. There is a new improved search function, he said. Rogers acknowledged that the former WinonaPost.com was clunky. “This new site gives us the same powerful storytelling and advertising tools as the largest papers in the region,” Rogers said. He called the layout clean and easy to navigate. Like the twice-weekly print edition, the site is free: “No paywalls, survey questions, or clickbait articles.” The site features a new events calendar where organizers can post events, he said. The Post had been infamous for “shovelware.” a derisive journalistic term for posting stories online only after they had appeared in print. Now, Rogers expressed a commitment to timely reports online. “We’re often the only ones covering local stories and events, and I hope this new website makes that work even more accessible and useful,” he said. In a slightly veiled slap at the Winona Daily News which no longer is daily and which is edited in LaCrosse and somewhere in Ohio, Rogers said: “At the Winona Post, the local community always comes first. From our publisher on down, our entire organization is based in Winona.”

Rogers. “As a journalist, there are few things more satisfying than seeing ordinary people empowered to get involved in local democracy.”
