MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Alderman Chantia Lewis, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, was charged with five criminal counts alleging that she filed false campaign finance reports and defrauded the city of Milwaukee and her campaign of more than $21,000. Lewis, 41, was told to appear in court on September 29. Lewis has served the Milwaukee city council since 2016. She announced her intentions in July for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Ron Johnson. Ten others also are seeking the Democratic nomination. The charges against Lewis include depositing campaign contributions to personal bank accounts and structuring a campaign finance contribution to avoid contribution limits. Lewis also was charged with billing the city for parts of family vacation to Florida, including a side trip to a trampoline park. She also spent $310 in campaign money to attend a Florida worship conference that was unrelated to city business. There also $4,800 in campaign money for payments toward her apartment rent, according to the criminal complaint.
