PITTSVILLE, Wis. – The state wildlife agency has scheduled a public hearing to discuss possibly purging hundreds of deer from the 9,000-acre Sandhill Wildlife Area west iof Wisconsin Rapids. The question is whether the highly contagious chronic-wasting deer affliction, sometimes called deer zombie disease, has entered the preserve. If so, the state Natural Resources Department would call in hunters to rid the area of all deer. For two years the agency has had a nine-foot fence around the preserve to keep the disease out.
