MINNEAPOLIS – By a wide margin Minneapolis voters rejected a proposal to convert the city’s Police Department into a Public Safety Department. The vote was 56% to 44%. The proposal was a reaction to the police killing of George Floyd in May 2021 and accumulated evidence of white-on-black police excesses over the years. The proposal was designed to emphasize public safety over policing with cops called in only as a last resort.
