WINONA, Minn. – Light smoke set off an alarm at the north building of Winona State University’s East Lake apartments, forcing students to evacuate to the parking lot. A third-floor student said she had been heating oil to cook and it got too hot. By the time firefighters arrived, the oil was no longer smoking but the apartment was full of smoke and pouring from one side of the building. This was about 3:40 p.m. Residents were allowed to return inside and regroup in the lobby until the smoke cleared. No one was injured.
