POSTVILLE, Iowa – The automobile crash that fatally injured Trooper Ted Benda was caused when he swerved to avoid a deer, the Iowa State Patrol reported. A detail investigation concluded that the deer entered the road from the west ditch on Highway 51 near Postville. Benda swerved to the other lane, lost traction. and hit an embankment. The car overturned. This was the night of October 14 as Benda responding to a call to assist other officers.
