WINONA, Minn. — Police arrested a Winona man for the savage beating of another man on a downtown street in broad daylight Friday evening. Richard Gordon Deppe, 31, had eluded police three days. He was taken without resistance at an upstairs apartment in the 150 block of Lafayette Street. The arrest was less than a block from the assault occurred. When arrested, police said, Deppe refused to make a statement about the attack. The booking charge: Assault with substantial bodily harm. The victim, age 25, whose name police have not released, was in improving but guarded condition at a LaCrosse hospital. The victim told police he knew Deppe but couldn’t explain the attack.
