ST. PAUL, Minn. – Governor Tim Walz made the rounds at the 2024 Legislature’s opening-day event with trays of dessert goodies for lawmakers. The governor had plenty of apple blondies for everyone, Democrats and Republicans alike. His staff had made the blondies, crowned with a maple and cinnamon brown butter glaze. The governor wedged the slices of of foil trays with a spatula. A little messy, a little gooey, but oh so good.
“Hi, Gene.” Said Walz to Winona Representative Gene Pelowski. “Please have an apple blondie.” This legislative session is Pelowski’s last. He’s retiring after almost four decades.Image: Dana Ferguson
