WINONA, Minn. – Deputy Police Chief Jay Rasmussen says a man was scammed out of $200 by responding to a Facebook advertisement asking for a donation for a relief fund. The man sent $200, then received a message back asking for his Social Security number and an additional $300. Suspicious, the man called police. There wasn’t much police could do, Rasmussen said. He said he’s seen online scams that have cost as much as $97,000. His advice: “Never send money to people you don’t know.” And call police if you’re doubting something or someone. Studies show that the people most at risk are older and frequent n social media a lot.
