ALBERT LEA, Minn. – A police officer and two others were shot and wounded in a nine-hour standoff at an eight-story apartment building on the South side. In the end, after being hit by police shrapnel, a 21-year-old Albert Lea man surrendered. The man, Devin Matthew Weiland, was taken to a Rochester hospital for surgery. The wounded police officer had been among the first to respond to a noise complaint about 2 a.m. He took a bullet in the chest but drove himself to a hospital emergency room. He was treated and released. Two residents at the building, age 52 and 36, were air-lifted to a Rochester hospital during the course of the standoff.
