FORT MCCOY, Wis. – The first Afghan refugees to depart Fort McCoy for resettlement in the United States were briefed on rules of travel, on where they will be going, and on who will contact them when arrive at their destinations. The pre-departure briefings were in a warehouse outfitted with folding chairs. Fort Coy has been temporary home for 12,000 Afghanis left vulnerable by the final departure of U.S. soldiers from Afghanistan. In all, 50,000 U.S.-friendly Afghans were airlifted from Kabul to orientation sites for transition into new lives.
