BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The state Natural Resources Department called on hunters to be sure they don’t mistake one of the state’s still-rare bull elk for a deer. “Deer hunters in this area aren’t used to looking out for elk, which makes sense,” said wildlife Supervisor Scott Roepke. “These bulls are some of the first elk seen in more than 100 years.” Bull elk were eliminated from Wisconsin in the 1880s, but there is a state effort to reestablish them around Black River Falls. There are currently 100 animals in the central forest herd but some wander south in the fall.
