ST. PAUL, Minn. – The day after it was leaked that the U.S. Supreme Court plans to overrule abortions as federally protected human right, there were two anti-abortion proposals offered in the Minnesota House. The proposals, both from Republicans, were during debate on the major $768 million health and human services bill. House Speaker, Melissa Hortman ruled the proposed amendments out of order. Hortman, from Minneapolis suburb Brooklyn Park, is a Democrat and also a Catholic. Too few House members were willing to overrule Hortman’s decision that the amendments were out of order. These were failed Republican amendments:
> To require medical clinics performing 10 or more abortions per month to obtain a state license.
> To prohibit family planning grants “to directly or indirectly subsidize abortion services or related administrative expenses.”
