WINONA, Minn. – Bird-watchers have cameras handy for rare sightings of a pantropical brown booby that has shown up on the Mississippi River near Winona and LaCrosse. The bird was “way lost,” said Winona birder Steve Young. More than 40 sightings have been logged. Their usual environs are coastal salt waters. Brown boobies plunge-dive as fast as 80 mph to take small fish. They roost on solid objects, not the water surface. One Winona sighting was a booby on a barge.
