ROCKFORD, Ill. — A former superintendent of Winona Schoolsm Paul Durand, was charged with embezzling more than $42,000 through a work credit card in his new job as schools superintendent in Rockford. Durand, age 63, faces 11 felony counts of embezzling and three counts of swindling. The counts of embezzlement cover 21 months beginning in February 2018. He had been Rockford’s school superintendent since 2010. Durand left Winona in 2010 after the School Board voted 4-3 in April against extending his contract. In Rockford an annual audit found that Durand’s district credit card had been used for a laptop, home security equipment, two Apple watches and more than $3,800 worth of gasoline. Durand’s attorney, Peter Wold, said that he never intended to do anything wrong.
