WINONA, Minn. – The Cotter Schools governing board authorized construction of a new grade school at the former College of St. Teresa campus, consolidating the Cotter merger with the former parish-based Catholic School system. The old CST dorm, Loretto Hall on Hilbert Street, will be renovated into the new school. The board called the renovation a process to “deconstruct, renovate and add new features.” The school will be able to accommodate 600 students with four classrooms for grades 1 to 7, the Board said. The facility, although only a block from Cotter junior and senior high schools, will have its own cafeteria, gym and playground.

Bye, Loretto. The architecturally bland dorm, built of locally quarried Biesanz stone, was constructed in 1962 to house 200 St. Teresa College students. The college, defunct since 1989, was in a growth mode only two decades earlier.

Verbatim

Cotter letter to supports: “When you drive by and see fences and equipment at Loretto, stop and give thanks for the incredible generosity of others who are making this a reality. Cotter is blessed to have many individuals who give selflessly so that our students can have a high-quality Catholic education.”
