LAKEVILLE, Minn. – A juvenile on a home computer made the bomb threat that closed Lakeville schools on May 20, police said. Responding to the threat, administrators told 11,000 students to stay home and go online for classes. The motivation of the youth who issued the threat was not reported. Police referred the case to the Dakota County attorney for prosecution. The FBI helped track the source of bomb threat. The threat, in the early morning, was in an email to several Lakeville South High School staff members. The county Electronic Crimes Unit swept all school district buildings, found no bomb, and determined the threat was a hoax.

The Lakeville School District covers 86 square miles in an exurban area 22 miles south of Minneapolis. The district has eight elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools.
