WINONA, Minn. – The astronomically sensational aurora borealis, otherwise called the “northern lights,” began a three-night run of dancing across southern Minnesota skies. The phenomenon is high-level ice crystals catching sun rays from over the horizon and reflecting them like a prism. Look north.

Borealis map. The Space and Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, shows the display being visible unusually far south. Weather permitting, of course.
