ST. PAUL, Minn. – The secret is out. Minnesota’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, will seek a second term. The leak originated with U.S, Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, who announced that they support Ellison’s candidacy. Ellison is a former U.S. Congress member from Minneapolis and also deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee. He was elected attorney general in 2018 — his first statewide office. His campaign promise was to “protect Minnesotans.” His first term has been marked by suits against pharmaceutical companies, the Trump administration, and Minnesota businesses that violated CoVid restrictions. He also orchestrated the high-profile case against police officer Derek Chauvin for grossly excessive policing in the defeat of George Floyd. In 2018 Ellison, a Democrat, defeated Republican Doug Wardlow. As attorney general, Ellison succeeded fellow Democrat Lori Swanson. Minnesota has not had a Republican attorney general since 1970.
