FORT MCOY, Wis. – A post spokesperson confirmed that the first Afghan refugees evacuated from Kabul have arrived at Fort McCoy. No information was released on how many refugees were in the first contingent or about their route from Kabul to Wisconsin. Most Kabul refugees first were airlifted 1,100 miles to Qatar, where U.S. cargo planes made quick turn-arounds to return for more refugees. From Qatar the refugees were being transported to more than a dozen countries that agreed to accept them for resettlement. The refugees are mostly translators, drives and fixers who worked for U.S. military and diplomatic personnel during the Afghan war.
