MINNEAPOLIS — Veteran sports broadcaster Tom Hanneman died in his sleep. He was 68. The family didn’t announce the cause of death. Friends said it was a heart attack. Most recently Hanneman had been with a Fox television sports network. His reputation was for classy play-by-play announcing and sense of humor. He studied at the University of Minnesota and started in journalism in LaCrosse television. He joined WCCO in Minneapolis in the 1970s. His reporting won national attention in 1979 when he was taken hostage while covering an uprising on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Eventually he worked his way into sports. He was the television play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Timberwolves basketball team from 1989 until he left for Fox Sports North in 2012.
