Magician details origins of fake Biden robocall

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans magician who created the faked Biden robocalls for the Hew Hampshire presidential primary said he was punked into doing it. Paul Carpenter said he had believed that  the political consultant who hired him to make the recordings was with the Biden campaign — not Biden’s Minnesota challenger Dean Philips. When Carpenter  realized he had been duped, Carpenter said, he texted the Philips operative, Steve Kramer: “Dude, what’s going on?”  Carpenter quoted Kramer’s response:

“Hahaha. It’s all good. Don’t worry about it. Just delete all the emails. Act like nothing happened .Don’t worry about t. It’s going to disappear.”

Carpenter instead contacted an NBC reporter, who broke the story natioally. Later, Carpenter said, he learned that criminal investigations had been launched. In his defense as creater of the rbocall, Carpenter said: “I created the gun. I didn’t shoot it.”

Downtown fire devastates Tomah business block

Most of Ho-Chunk museum collection salvaged

TOMAH, Wis. – Flames broke out about 6 p.m. and quickly spread through side-by-side downtown Tomah businesses, some with shared walls, and also destroyed walk-up second-floor apartments. As far as was known initially, everyone in the buildings escaped. Police closed off three blocks of the Superior Avenue main drag between Juneau and LaCrosse streets. Superior Avenue, a north-south street, connects to the Interstate Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 interchanges into Tomah. The plume was visibe from both interstates as dusk fell. Among threatened spaces was the Ho-Chunk Nation museum. A tribal official said several individuals acted quickly and removed 90% of the collection. Destroyed was a central business in the block — Sassy Girl Aroma, which sells scented waxes and candles. Firefighters were summoned from other fire departments – Black River Falls, 31 miles away; Cutler, 16 miles; Elroy, 33 miles; Hixton, 41 miles; Mauston, 28 miles; New Lisbon, 21 miles; Norwalk, 17 miles;  Oakdale, 7 miles;  Volk Field 14 miles; Warrens, 11 miles; and Wes Salem, 30 miles. Fire Chief Tim Adler said he expected crews to be on-site through the night.

Previous fire

Thus was the second large building fire in Tomah in recent months. In November a block away, also on Superior Avenue, fire destroyed the Peking Chinese restaurant and upstairs apartments. That too was a block of densely packed older storefronts.

Minnesota candidate: No role in faked robocall

WAYZATA, Minn. — Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips denied knowledge of robocalls that faked President Biden’s voice to discourage voter turnout in the New Hampshire presidential primary. Phillips, who is seeking the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination, stood to benefit from a low turnout. According to credible news accounts, the robocalls were masterminded by a Phillips campaign consultant. Phillips acknowledged that the consultant, Steve Kramer, had been on his payroll but that his contract has expired. About Kramer, Phillips said: “I’m disgusted that a consultant hired to assist my campaign with ballot access is alleged to have faked a robocall impersonating Joe Biden.” Phillips called the robocalls despicable. Phillips invited authorities to nvestigate. Phillips said he never knew Kramer personally. Kramer is a New York-based consultant. He was paid $260,000 by the Phillips campaign for services in December and January, according to required periodic reports to the Federal Elections Commission. The New Hampshire primary was January 23.

Verbatim

Katie Dolan, a Phillips spokesperson: “If it is true that Mr. Kramer had any involvement in the creation of deep-fake robocalls, he did so of his own volition, which had nothing to do with our campaign. The fundamental notion of our campaign is the importance of competition, choice and democracy.” Dolan said the campaign’s relationship with Kramer ended several weeks ago. His contract, she said, was only to gather signatures to help Phillips get on the ballot in assigned states.

Scam: Woman converts $,9,00 to bitcoin

WINONA, Minn. – A 77-year-old Winona woman was scammed out of $5,900 in an elaborate scheme that began when her home computer screen grayed out. Soon she got a call from someone posing as a Microsoft technician.  He said 6,000 corrupted files had been found and then something regarding child pornography and a pending federal investigation. He asked for personal data, which the woman provided. Then came a call from someone posing as from the woman’s Wells Fargo bank branch. He said her account would be blocked the next one to three days and that she should convert her balance to bitcoin and transfer it for safekeeping and ongoing access to an interim Wells account in Rochester. She did – the whole $5.900 balance.

Aide to Minnesotan Phillps linked to fake robocall

NEW ORLEANS, La.– A dirty trick in the New Hampshire presidential primary originated with a consultant to Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips, NBC reported. The consultant hired an artificial-intelligence expert to fake the voice of President Biden for the robocall, the network reported. The robocall went to at least 5,000 voters, perhaps 25,000. NBC said the Phillips consultant, Steve Kramer, was responsible. A New Orleans street magician was quoted that he was paid $150 to create the artificially generated message in a sound-alike Biden voice. The magician showed NBC a message from Kramer with a script for the message. This was three days before the January 23 New Hampshire primary. The robocall went out the next day. The New Orleans street magician, Paul Carpenter, said he thought Kramer was with the Biden campaign. The project was pitched to him as a time-saving and cost-saving measure so Biden wouldn’t need to go to a recording studio, Carpenter said: “I didn’t know anything about Kramer working on the other presidential campaign”

911 robbery call leads to weapons confiscation

WINONA, Minn. – Police arrested a Winona man with a shotgun and a loaded revolver in an alley behind a West Side bar. Erik Todd Bennick, 31, offered no resistance, police said. In fact, the weapons were on the ground at Bennick’s side and his arms in the air when officers arrived. The officers were responding to a slurred and confused 911 call about being mugged by two men who were violating the caller’s “safe space.” This was about 1:20 a.m. The officers found no trace of other men. Bennick didn’t elaborate with any detail on the robbery that was alleged in the 911 call. Police confiscated these weapons:

> A 20-gauge single-bolt action New Haven shotgun manufactured by Mossberg & Sons, which was not loaded.

> A Nagant M1895 1revolder, loaded with seven 38-caliber rounds —  an antique that once was a standard-issue sidearm for the Imperial Russian Army .

Police said Bennick had been at Fast Eddie’s bar, 500 West Fifth Street He apparently then went home, which was nearby, and fetched the weapons. Exactly from where the 911 was made was unclear, but officers said that Bennick was carrying a phone. The arrest was between Fast Eddie’s and a residence. Officers said Bennick exhibited signs of intoxication: Blood-shot and watery eyes, slurred speech and poor balance.
