Traffic stop yields 28 baggies with cocaine traces

WINONA, Minn. —  A driver who shouldn’t have been driving — a revoked license, no insurance and also several arrest warrants — was stopped by a police officer who recognized him. Right away, the officer said, David Paul Thunborg‑Valentine admitted he had a bunch of plastic baggies in the car. The baggies previously held cocaine, the officer was told. The emphasis was on “previously.” A search of the vehicle found 28 baggies. Yes, 28! The baggies  were empty, as Thunborg‑Valentine had said, but they contained visible traces of cocaine. That was sufficient to add illegal drug possession to other charges. Thunborg‑Valentine, age 29, of Winona, was taken to jail. The stop was about 9:55 p.m. near Fourth and Johnson streets downtown.

Supreme Court justice moving to chief role

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Supreme Court has a new chief justice-designate — Theodora Karin Gaïtas, who already sits on the court as an associate justice. In the announcing of his choice of Gaïtas, Governor Tim Walz noted that she will be the first chief justice in Minnesota history with a background as a public defender. Her perspective, Walz said, “will be invaluable as she takes on this profound responsibility to serve all Minnesotans.” Gaïtas holds a 1994 law degree from the University of Minesota. Out of law school, she was an associate defender in Bucks County in western Pennsylvania. Later she was a public defender in Minnesota’s Hennepin County. Her subsequent career:

> 2018: A Hennepin County district judge.

> 2020: A Minnesota Court of Appeals judge.

> 2024: A Minnesota Supreme Court justice.

Gaïtas is Minnesota-born but grew up in Athens and returned to Minnesota for college. Her father was a Greek immigrant and her mother an American citizen. As chief justice she succeeds Nagalie Hudson, who retires in January. Walz chose Gaïtas from a field of seven candidates recommended by a Bar Association commission. The field included three current justices: Gaitas, Anne McKeig and Paul Thissen

Gaïtas. Has served at all three levels of the state judicial branch. Her age: 55.

Aligada. Moving from Hennepin County judgeship to Supreme Court. His age : 50.

New to Supreme Court

To fill the vacancy created by the Gaïtas appointment as chief justice, Governor Walz named Ramsey County District Court Judge Reynaldo Aligada Jr. Walz called Aligada “someone who leaves a lasting impression on everyone he meets, pairing a keen legal mind with genuine humility and compassion.” Aligata was appointed to his Hennepin County judgeship by Walz in 2019 and was elected in 2020. He is a graduate of the Mitchell Hamline law school.  He has experience as a federal public defender.

Supreme Court profile

The Minnesota Supreme Court could be called “the Walz Court.” Of the seven justices, five are Walz appointees. Note too: All seven are appointees of Democratic governors. After their initial appointment’s, they serve six-year terms, subject to statewide election. Candidates are not identified on ballots by any political affiliation but by whether they’re incumbents.

Bye: Quick-service Italian eatery Fazoli’s

ONALASKA, Wis. — The Fazoli Italian-menu franchise in this LaCrosse suburb is closing despite a loyal customer base. Lisa Davids, general manager, blamed the owner of the next-door strip mall for raising the Fazoli rent. The 15-table sand-alone restaurant has been a curbside fixture in the U.S. Highway16 retail district. The strip-mall owner justified more rent because an influx of small shops in the area has increased customer traffic, Davids said. The Kentucky-based.Fazaoli  chain has 190 locations nationally.

Wilson submits paperwork for House 26-A ballot

WINONA, Minn. — The Democrat who sees himself as Winona’s next representative in the Minnesota House, Dan Wilson, has made his candidacy official. Wilson presented 500 signatures to Chelsi Wilbright, the county election supervisor, to be on the ballot. With 500 signatures, the usual $100 filing fee was waived. It is expected that incumbent Aaron Repinski, a Republican, will file his papers soon. Wilson made his filing a media event, repeating his claim to having raised $72,000 for his campaign: “If fundraising is viewed as a proxy for enthusiasm, then it’s clear that we have a lot of it.”  The Repinski-Wilson race is closely watched statewide as competitive and could break the 67-67 Democrat-Republican split in the House that has stalled the legislative process this year.

Rochester sports-rec park lives on

PRESTON, Minn. — A proposal to stop a proposed $65 million sports and recreation park in southeast Rochester failed in the Minnesota Legislature. State Senator Greg Davds, a Preston Republican, said time ran out in the 2026 legislative session to get the bill through committees. Davids had sponsored the bill in the Senate. The bill’s prime sponsors were Representatives Kim Hicks, Tina Liebling and Andy Smith. All are Rochester Democrats. They had wanted to derail the project, arguing that promoters of the complex had committed a bait-and-switch. Voters who approved new taxes for the project, they said, would never how plans were distorted in recent revisions.

GOP stymies House vote on gun control

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Republican House speaker Lisa Demuth, refused to allow a vote on a stronger firearms bill in the closing moments of the 2026 Minnesota Legislature. In effect Demuth’s intransigence killed what had been a Democratic priority in the 120-day legislative session. Also killed without a House vote was a Democratic bill to provide relief for businesses and individuals affected negatively by President Tump’s Operation Metro Surge. At midnight Demuth gaveled the 2026 session to its end. That was “all she wrote,” as the rock band FireHouse sang in their namesake 1991 album. As the clock was ticking toward the constitutionally mandated adjournment, the Democratic House floor leader, Jamie Long, asked Demuth whether she was delaying votes on Democrat-favored bills. Demuth responded that the issues were “being reviewed.” Long persisted: “Can you confirm that the reason we were unable to vote on the comprehensive gun violence prevention package and the comprehensive response to Operation Metro Surge is that you have held the bills and not released them?” Demuth answered: “That is not true,” Long asked her why it was not true. Demuth did not answer. At the stroke of midnight GOP House floor leader Harry Niska intervened and made a motion to recess.

Cast in House drama

Lisa Demuth, Republican from old Spring in Stearns County. She is the leading GOP candidate for governor.

Jamie Long, a Democrat from Minneapolis.

Harry Niska, a Democrat from Cook Rapids in Anoka County.

Walz agenda

Governor Tim Walz , a Democrat, had attempted to call  a special session of the Legislature to consider ser stiffer gun conrols after a mass shooting n August at Anunciation at Church nd School in Minneapolis. Republicans wouldn’t agree ti a a special session. When the regular session of the Legislature convened in February, a bill was drafted to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The bill also included millions of dollars for school-based mental health programs and an anonymous threat reporting system. The Senate approved the bill last week. But Republicans in the  House, claimed the bill failed to address basic questions about how it would work. The fate of the bill in the Huse was uncertain. The House is an even67-67 split between Democrats and Republicans. The House GOP leadership decided to delay a vute so its mebers would noy have to answer fo yea-or-nay vote in their next election.

Capitol showdown

Democrats held a 36-hour sit-in on the House floor to demand that Demuth bring up the gun control package. Lawmakers began the sit-in at 9 p.m. on Saturday and and vowed to stay until the House was gaveled back into session. Throughout the sit-in the Democrats streamed messages on their social media pages to hundreds of gun control advocates demonstrating utside the Capitol.

A family of two minds

Demuth’s adult daughter participated in the pro-gun control public demonstration outside the Capitol during the House sit-in inside. Shelis Demuth said her hope was that her mother would bring the gun control package up for a vote but understood hopes for passage were limited because House committees had deadlocked between the two parties. Said the Demuth daughter: “My mom prides herself on being fair, and that might mean that it does have to wait ‘till next session.” That would be in 2027. As ironic as ji may seem, Demuth’s four children were aenrolled at the Rocori school in her Cold Spring hometown during  a 2003 school shooting.
