Iowa tornado hits rural house: One injury
JOICE Iowa — One person was injured when a tornado ripped into a house just south of the Minnesota border near this northeast Iowa village of 200 people. Worth County deputies said the victim was hospitalized and expected to recover. Two people, a married couple, were in the house when the tornado hit about 10 p.m. A shed was destroyed. Damage to the house included broken windows.
Walz sends National Guard to fire duty
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Governor Tim Walz declared an emergency due to wildfires in northern Minnesota and activated the National Gard to help. Dry, windy, and hot conditions have put most of Minnesota at risk of dangerous wildfires. Walz said: “This emergency declaration ensures we can fully mobilize the resources needed to protect lives, support evacuations, and help communities respond and recover.”
Biker injured in Marion deer collision
ROCHESTER, Minn. — A motorcyclist was injured when he struck a deer as he was heading west into Rochester on U.S. Highway 14. John Kenneth Pereda, 54, of Byron, was taken seven miles to a Rochester hospital with sustainable injuries. The accident was about 2:10 p.m.in Marion Township. Pereda was alone on his 2022 Harley FLTRKSE. He was helmeted, said Olmsted County deputie
Search on hold or Southeast College president
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota State colleges president, Scott Olson, plans to name a temporary president for State College Southeast rather than restart a search for a permanent president immediately. Olson cancelled the original search after a lukewarm faculty response to four finalists at the twin-campus Winona-Red Wing college. Olson told faculty at the time: “I wanted it to be somebody that you were really excited about, the community was really excited about, that I was really excited about.” Since then Olson has been mulling over nine applications for the interim — probably all next academic year while a search for a permanent president is relaunched.

Pair hurt when four-wheeler overturns at 42 mph
ELBA, Minn. — The driver and passenger in a small-wheel cab-enclosed all-terrain vehicle were injured when it overturned just out of town. A passerby told Winona County deputies that the driver was slumped unconscious over the steering wheel. His passenger, a woman, was lying on the ground. This was about 5:55 p.m. Both were taken 26 miles to a Rochester hospital. Their injuries were described as non-life threatening. They had been at an Elba establishment, deputies were told. Deputies understood that the driver, Daniel Neil Brown, age 35, of Stockton had reached to open a window for air at 42 mph. Blood was drawn at the hospital to determine what charges might be warranted.

Wildfires erupt in dry forests Up North

Roads closed as flames spread. Dozens of fires, many small, have kindled themselves from grass and thrash in a wide arc stretching from Brainerd to Two Harbors.
Largest fire uncontained at 2,000 acres
TWO HARBORS, Minn. — Wildfires raged across the north-central Minnesota lake country, one at 2,000 acres. The summer resort season has yet to start, but year-round local populations were alerted to prepare to evacuate. At Crosslake in Crow Wing County the community center was set up to house evacuees. The largest fires:
> Flanders Fire. 10 miles east of Breezy Point in Crow Wing County, 2,000 acres
> Stewart Trail Fire, three miles north of Twin Harbors in Lake County, 375 acres with 34 structures destroyed .
There were dozens of fires in the parched forests. It was thought that one fire originated when someone losing of a fmallcard board. Other fires are listed as origin uncertain. Local jurisdictions have banned campfire and open burning. “Hotshot” wildland crews from Ontario have been called in. The Minnesota Incident Command System transported bulldozers and tracked vehicles to fires. A temporary flight restriction was ordered to avoid interference with tanker planes making water and retardant drops. Drones also were banned. Many roads were barricaded, including State Highway 61 along Lake Superior and Coujnty Road 2.
Employee accused of sucker-punching co-worker
WINONA, Minn. — An Arizona man was cited for a fight at an establishment in the Old Homer Road hotel complex. Reportedly Herkules Messiah-Emmanuel Anu, age, 34, of Maricopa, Arizona, sucker-punched a co-worker in the face. Medical care was not required. This was about 10:30 p.m. A citation alleging assault was mailed.

Crash injures drivers between Whitehall, Independence
WHITEHALl, Wis. —Two people were injured in a head-on crash west of Whitehall. One driver was severely injured and flown to a hospital. The other driver suffered lesser injuries and was taken to the hospital by ground ambulance. Without explanation Trempealeau County Sheriff Erica Koxlief declined to release names. The crash was about 9:50 p.m. where State Highway 121 and County Road QQ intersect — near the Canadian National rail crossing. Deputies said a Ford Fusion was traveling east toward Whitehall but in the westbound lane. Going west toward Independence was a Chrysler Pacifica.
450 tassel-flips at Southeast College commencement
WINONA, Minn. — Walking the stage at Minnesota Southeast College’s commencement ceremony were 450 graduates. In all, 580 certificates, diplomas and degrees. were awarded. At 930 the total exceeded last year’s 900. The twin-campus college, with sites in Winona and Red Wing, held the ceremony at the Winona State University gym. Notable at the event:
> Recognition of band instrument repair instructor as John Huth as outstanding educator of the year.
> Recognition of Jason Bystrom, a 2010 graduate in band instrument repair, co-owner of Red Wing Music, who mentors current students as a volunteer.
> An address by Laura Scott, originally from LeSueur, who returned to college after 10 years for her degree in business management.

Warning: Wildlands ripe for catastrophic fires
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Natural Resources Department issued a red-flag warning for wildland and fire danger in 11 western counties fm counties Superior to Eagle River and south to Rusk. Burn permits were suspended in 15 additional counties. Warm temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry fuels from lack of precipitation worsened the chances for catastrophic fires, the agency warned.
Jury: Mom guilty in death of 6-year-old son
LACROSSE, Wis. — After four hours of deliberation a jury found a rural LaCrosse County woman guilty of causing the death of her 6-year-old son. The jury found Josie Marie Dikeman, age 35, guilty of:
> Chronic neglect of a child with death resulting, punishable possibly by 60 years in prison.
> Repeated physical abuse of a child with death resulting, punishable possibly by life in prison;
Judge Elliott Levine delayed sentencing to July. He also rescinded Dikeman’s bail and ordered her to be held in the county jail until sentencing. The trial took three weeks. After closing arguments Thursday, the 12 jurors spent two hours in initial deliberations that included a review of video evidence from the Dikeman home in rural Medary. Jurors reconvened two hours later in the morning and then announced their verdict.

Rochester police make homicide arrest
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Police arrested a man suspected in the shooting death of another man in a parking lot of a Norhwest Side apartment building the evening before. Taken into custody and held on a tentative homicide charge was Derrell Williams, 34, of Rochester. Police said Williams was arrested just before 10 a.m. about three miles from the shooting scene. No other details were released.

Backyard fight ends with one brother’s arrest
WINONA, Minn. — A West Side man was arrested and charged with beating up his brother in a backyard scrap. Charged was Chase Michael Wehner, 27. A neighbor called police to the 350 block of West Sanborn Street about yelling next door. This was about 6:50 p.m. Officcrs found one brother, age 37, with a bloody lip, reddened face and a torn neckless. The brothers’ mother, who said she witnessed the fight, pointed to Chase as the primary aggressor. Neither brother required attention. The older brother said he had idea why he was attacked.

Gunman kills man; cops say virctim was targeted
ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Rochester man has been fatally shot outside an apartment building in the Essex Park neighborhood. The victim, Carlton Gardner, age 31, appeared to have been targeted, police said. The assailant had fled by the time police arrived. Police put drones in the air to look for the suspect. This was about 5:15 p.m. just west of the Watson Soccer Field in the 900 block of 41st Street Northwest.
Auto-plate reader ID’d stolen car; driver arrested
WINONA, Minn. — Police arrested a Houston County driver in a car reported stolen in Lakeville and was caught entering Winona on a license-plate reading device. Arrested was Austin Brian Grothe, age 20, of Houston. It turned that Grothe was wanted also on an arrest warrant from Olmsted County, police said. A Winona officer spotted the vehicle about 4:55 p.m. at Sarnia and Main streets and made the stop a couple blocks away. Apparently the vehicle had been driven 120 miles in Lakeville in Dakota County. The vehicle crossed the Winona city limits at an arterial equipped with a pole-mounted Flock license-plate reader. These readers comprise a latter-day moat on the city’s perimeter. The Flock system alerts local police dispatchers to vehicles that have been logged by police, even far way, as suspect in a cerine.

Veteran State Senator Carla Nelson bowing out
ROCHESTER, Minn. — The influential Republican state senator Carla Nelson is leaving elected public service. She announced she will not seek re-election to a fifth term. Earlier she was in the Minnesota House. Nelson is 68. She underwent open heart surgery in 2023, Her recovery required five months, mostly between legislative sessions. The recovery was successful, and Nelson didn’t mention health in announcing her departure from public office. In fact the announcement was forward looking “to new ways to serve.” In the Legislature she was instrumental in:
> The public-private partnership Destination Medical Center to promote Rochester as a global destination for healthcare.
> The 2017 bipartisan budget to put an additional $1.3 billion in Minnesota public schools, increasing per-pupil support by $320 a year.
> The 2018 Safe and Secure Schools Act, with $20 million for bulletproof glass, single-point entry systems, and security cameras.
> The 2022 $8.5 billion package to reduce income taxes for every Minnesota filer and eliminate the state tax on Social Security benefits.
> Raising the legal age to buy tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21.

Valley View Mall owner apparently cashing out
ONALSAKA, Wis. — The New York-based Kohan Retail Investment Group, which buys struggling malls and sells off parcels, apparently has unloaded the remaining remnants if of Valley View Mall outside LaCrosse. There has been no announcement aside from a cryptic post on Valley View’s home page: “Under new ownership and management.” Kohan has 28 properties in 19 states. Most are gentrifying malls, The company’s practice been to allow facilities to deteriorate while selling off parcels.The company has a record delinquent tax and utility payments. Kohan took over Valley View Mall in 2023. It’s been a problematic few months. In 2024 the mall was closed a few days for delinquency on an electricity bill. This spring: Building inspectors closed the mall a few days as unsafe when the roof at its largest tenant, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, sprag leaks.
