UM-Rochester enrollment at 1,000 milestone

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Enrollment at the University of Minnesota-Rochester has reached a symbolically important 1,000, according to a preliminary tally for fall semester. Chancellor Lori Carrell said the growth was due mostly due to 400 new undergraduates, compared to 200 a year earlier. The UW-Rochester program was begun in 2006, cobbled together from a hodge-podge of earlier programs.  For Carrel the 1,000 had been a “bold” goal. She sees more ahead: 1,500 as a “bolder” goal and 2,500 as “boldest.” She noted that the downtown dorm, in the former Double Tree hotel, is at capacity with 400 beds.

Deepfake posts defame, irk Catholic bishop

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Can you believe that southern Minnesota’s Catholic bishop has gone online with advice for cleansing demons from your toilet? Don’t. The post was one of several faked to show Bishop Robert Barron making absurd assertions of things he never said. They are deepfake posts created with AI technology. The bishop doesn’t know source of the perversity but has alerted his followers to ignore profiles purporting to be his if they that don’t have an authenticating blue check. Also, said the bishop: “Use your common sense.” Among absurdities:

> Pope Leo XIV has summoned the bishop to the Vatican to hash out areas of disagreement.

> The bishop got into a fist fight at a Chicago restaurant.

Barron is a celebrity target for his “Word on Fire” site, whose daily comments on spiritual issues have 3.1 million followers on Facebook and 1.6 million on YouTube. About the deepfake videos, Barron is not amused: “They are not harmless fun.” They are libels intended to damage his reputation as well as vehicles to channel viewers to advertising, he said.

Not on our airwaves: Neil Young’s anti-Trump ode

WINONA, Minn. — Radio stations with classic rock formats that reach Winona, all natural homes for Neil Young music, nave yet to air his “Big Crime,” a savage indictment of Trump president policies. Young debuted the song Thursday in Chicago on a new tour. The song doesn’t name Trump but doesn’t need to.  It unmistakably mocks Trump’s signature slogan “Make America Great Again,” by repeating “No more great again” to a deep beat. Besides being absent from federally licensed over-air radio, the song isn’t on playlists of the satellite music service Sirius XM, even though the service occasionally has had a whole channel dedicated to Young’s repertoire of protest music going back to the Vietnam period. The song “Big Crime,” however, has been downloaded thousands of times from Young’s website. Young, age 79, has been an outspoken environmentalist and advocate of artistic freedom.

NOTE: Please let us know if you hear “Big Crime” on the air. It appears that stations, all federally licensed, have been shy about insulting Trump and haven’t answered our queries. Reply to editor@winonajournal.com

Mold delays first school day at Wabasha-Kellogg

WABASHA, Minn — The new school year at Wabasha-Kellogg has been put off until at least Thursday because of a fungal infestation. Classes had been scheduled to begin after Labor Day but not now. Last Monday an overwhelming presence of the common mold spore spergillus penicillium was discovered in elementary classrooms. Superintendent Nels Onstad said a scrub-down company has begun a thorough cleaning:

> Vacuuming and disinfecting horizontal surfaces.

> Extracting water from carpets and disinfecting.

> Ventilating fans, dehumidifiers, and air scrubbers.

Onstad blamed a lack of continuous dehumidification during an unusually wet summer. The school has 900 students through 12th grade. The building was constructed in 1974 on flatland south of town. The site is within a mile of Mississippi backwaters and swamps and across the highway from two shallow lagoons.

Death claims retired Winona Catholic bishop

LIVONIA, Mich. — The Catholic bishop of the Winona diocese for 10 years, Bernard Harrington, died at age 91. He retired in 2009 and was living at the 35-acre Senior Clergy Village near Livonia, Michigan. The village grounds include Saint Mary Mercy Hospital. The cause of death was not announced. As Winona bishop. Harrington was the Vatican appointed spiritual leader for Catholics in 20 southern Minnesota counties stretching from border to border. Although the number of parishioners continued shrinking during his cathedra, the diocese still clamed 114,000 faithful — roughly 19% of the population. Harrington’s duties also were administrative.

Legacy as bishop

Harrington’s greatest challenge was unraveling Choir-Boy Sexual Abuse scandals and cover-ups that erupted in Boston and soon engulfed the whole American Catholic church. He negotiated a $28.5 million settlement to compensate survivors of priestly abuse. The settlement required a bankruptcy reorganization of diocesan finances. In response to the scandals, which involved dozens pf priests, many ordained within the diocese over the decades, Harrington implement what he called Safe Environment Practices. He also organized a new cohort of deacon to assist in governance. Separately he created what he called the Seeds of Faith endowment for faith formation, arranged new Catholic school scholarships, and expanded services offered by Catholic Charities. He also did preliminary thinking about moving the  diocesan headquarters from Winona to Rochester to reflect population shifts. He left it to his successor as bishop, John Quinn, to work through details and to the current bishop,  Robert Barron, to implement the delicacies of abandoning Winona, which had been the diocese seat sine 1889.

Clerical career

Earlier Harrington was an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He was the son of Irish immigrants in Detroit. He was ordained a priest in Detroit in 1959. His assignments included being a pastor, a superintendent of Catholic schools, and a rector of a seminary.
