WINONA, Minn. – To address short-staffing in police departments, Representative Gene Pelowski, D-Winona, is proposing free community college tuition. “We are in desperate need of law enforcement, Pelowski said in a KWNO interview. “This would be a way to keep people in law enforcement and also to encourage people to go into law enforcement.” Pelowski also would cover training updates for veteran officers.

Differing tacks

Pelowski’s bill in among several policing proposals for the Legislature, which convenes Monday. Democrats lean toward crime prevention. Republicans favor tougher penalties for offenders.
