ROCHESTER, Minn.  – A police officer shot a man whom the officer says jumped out of s van and came at him swinging an axe. The man died later at a hospital. The incident was about 1 a.m. in the South Broadway retail district. Police said the man had been stopped in his van on Highway 63 just south of the Highway 52 overpass for a robbery two hours earlier. Police had responded about 11 p.m. to the robbery at a  South Broadway business.  According to witnesses, a man had entered the business with an axe, took cash, and drove off. The officer who made the stop was not named in the initial police report to news reporters. The Department said, however, that he had been on the force a little more than a year and had earlier police experience. The police report did not name the victim either.

External investigation

The Rochester Police Department put the officer who fired the fatal shot on administrative leave, per its usual policy in such cases. The state Bureau of Criminal was notified to investigate the shooting. The Police Department, however, remained in charge of the robbery investigation.
