MOORHEAD, Minn. – The president of Moorhead State University Moorhead argued statically that killing 10 academic programs makes sense for budget-strapped times. Of 6,000 total students, only 175 students are in programs being cut, said Anne Blackhurst. At a news conference, Blackhurst was asked whether elimination of the theater major will affect the Straw Hat summer theater. She lauded the program as an important local cultural fixture but added thaT attendance has been slipping. Student enrollment in the theater major, she said, drove the decision. How many athletics positions are being eliminated? “One.” Asked whether the cuts would undermine the university’s liberal arts tradition, Blackhurst deferred. The most robust Moorhead programs, she said, have always been career-related. She education, business, nursing and social work.
