WINONA, Minn. — Donald James Nelson, 77, a retired teacher from Winona Middle School, died in home hospice. Students remember him for wearing a different tie every day and letting students decide their favorite for him to wear on the last day of school. He had lived on the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin and later the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, where his father was the police chief.He was a civil rights activist had managed Famine Food Co-op in Winona. He helped found the Winona Film Society at the Screening Room.
