FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. – The roar of racing cars returned the Mississippi Thunder dirt track a week late – and in defiance of a state order against large gatherings. Track owner Bob Tim earlier had acceded to the order and canceled the original April 24 opener, but he pressed county health officials and the sheriff to prove that he could put on races a week later without COVID-19 risks. Although health officials didn’t give permission, Timm was in regular communication with officials and followed their safety recommendations. Precautions included limits on spectators distancing and capped the number of drivers to 150. Timm agreed if the political fallout became too great, he would call off the races. It was a tacit deal – Blink, blink, nudge, nudge.
