ROCHESTER, Minn. – The city Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans for a nine-acre development on the Zumbro riverfront. The approval sets the stage for public hearings. Called the AMPI Stack Warehouse Project, the riverfront would repurpose the former AMPI dairy. The landmark smokestack would remain.There would a sixth Street bridge and new office, commercial, neighborhood retail buildings, and a wide range of housing.  The riverside railroad stub south to Libby plants would be replaced with a pedestrian walkway.  Retained would be the landmark AMPI smokestack. Te timeline: Significant portions within five years, with parts of the project 25 years off. Retained would be the Olmsted Medical Center, Olmsted Government annex and some office, restaurant, and residential uses.

The “Stack District.” Would take up the warehouse district organized around the former AMPI milk processing plant. Plans include a hotel connecting several new buildings with a glass atrium.
