EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Seven people asleep in a Near West Side house escaped as flames destroyed the place about 1 a.m. Three dogs and two cats were rescued. The Red Crosse was arranging lodging for four adults and three children ages 3 to 7. The first arriving crew found flames showing through windows and moving to the attic. The occupants were already out. Firefighters battled the fire in minus-14 degree overnight temperatures. A city bus was brought in for firefighters to warm up. One firefighter suffered minor injuries. Damage was pegged tentatively at $135,000.
