MAUSTON, Wis. – The shooting at the home of retired Judge John Roemer early Friday appeared to have been targeted, Attorney General Josh Kaul said at a news conference. Kaul declined to name the victim, but everybody in nearby New Lisbon, where the shooting occurred, knows that it was was at the home of Judge Roemer. Kaul said a second man, found wounded in the basement, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot, was carrying a list of several people related to the judicial system. Was the shooting a grudge killing? Would “assassination” be the right word? A murder-for-hire case? Kaul said only that the investigation was continuing. In the meantime, he said, there was no evidence of danger to other individuals. Everyone on the list had been notified. Kaul declined specify how many people were on the list.
