SPARTA, Wis. – More than two dozen dogs and cats died of smoke inhalation at a rural house fire while the owners were away. Fire Chief Mike Arnold said the animals were in a kennels in the house – 14 adult dogs, 12 puppies and two cats. Several dogs in outside kennels were unharmed. Firefighters were alerted to the fire by a passerby who saw heavy smoke about 3:40 p.m. It took four hours to out the fire out.
