ASHLAND, Wis.— The State Senate minority leader, Janet Bewley, has been sued for the traffic death of a 5-year-old girl in July. The girl’s father, Brandon Fink, accused Bewley of wrongful death. In the accident, police said, Bewley pulled out of a Lake Superior beach entrance into the path of a car in which Fink’s daughter, Khaleesi, was riding. The girl was pronounced dead at the crash. The girl’s mother was taken to the Ashland hospital, where she later died. Ashland police said Bewley was distracted by her hands-free mobile phone. There has been no criminal charge for the accident. District Attorney David Meany said police reports on the crash still were being reviewed. The accident was July 22.

Bewley, a Democrat, represents the sprawling Senate District 25, which covers Ashland, Bayfield, Rice Lake and Superior. She was elected to the State Assembly in 2012 and the Senate in 2014. Earlier she was an Ashland City Council member. She is a former community relations officer for the state Housing Development Authority. Brewley is 70 years old.
