HERMANTWN, Minn. – A small plane crashed into a suburban Duluth house, killing three people on board. Killed were Alyssa Schmidt, 32, of St. Paul; her brother, Matthew Schmidt, 31, of Burnsville; and Tyler Fretland, 32, of Burnsville. Fretland was the pilot. They had just taken off from the Duluth airport.Their Cessna 172 cut through four power lines, slammed into the second floor of the house, and fell into the backyard. No one was home. The impact left a hole in the s roof and brought down a section of its second floor. The crash was just before midnight 1-1/2 miles after take-off. The cause was not determined immediately.
