MINNEAPOLIS – A township clerk who embezzled $650,000 was sentenced to two years in federal prison and ordered to repay the money. Maryann Stoffel, 70, of Hastings, had pleaded guilty to the thefts from Vermillion Township over eight years. She forged the township chair’s signature on checks payable to the township.

Stoppel. One forgery at a time added up, averaging $80,000 a year.
