MADISON, Wis. – You can still rah-rah-rah for the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall stadium, but the field itself has a new name. The field has been christened for former athletic director and football coach Barry Alvarez. Starting next season, the field will go by “Barry Alvarez Field at Camp Randall Stadium.” Alvarez retired in June after 18 years as UW-Madison athletic director. Under his watch, the Badgers played in 26 football bowl games and won six Big Ten titles.
Now Alvarez Field. The stadium was named for Governor Alexander Randall, who helped organize the first Wisconsin volunteers for the Union Army. The stadium was built in 1917. The volunteers trained at the camp, which later served as a hospital and a prisoner-of-war camp. The stadium was built in 1917.
