DULUTH, Minn. – Forestry crews made major progress against wildfires in the Minnesota Arrowhead, “Fall temperatures, recent rains, and shorter days have helped to moderate fire conditions and active fires,” the U.S. Forest Service said. The massive Greenwood Fire a few miles from Isabella has been 37% contained within its scorched 41-square mile swath. The John Ek and Whelp fires, however, remained at zero containment — John Ek at 1,350 acres, Whelp at 50 acres. In all, the Forest Service has 490 firefighters either on fire lines and in support crews.
