WINONA, Minn. – The city Public Works Department lifted a warning for people n a 400-home area to boil water after two water main breaks. Brian DeFrang, public works director, said that West Burns Valley residents may see discolored water due to the flushing of the mains and the disturbance. However, he said, the water is safe. Any coloration will fade over the next few days, he said. Testing indicated that there is no bacteria in the water, he said. Affected were neighborhoods straddling Highway 43, a major thoroughfare out of Winona to the south. The breaks led to a loss of pressure that could have allowed contamination to get into the distribution system. During repairs, the city provided bottled water to the neighborhoods.
