WINONA, Minn. – A Winona State University crew has sawed down a 125-year-old hackberry, probably the oldest tree on campus. High winds October 14 had ripped off a limb, revealing internal rot. In a tribute, retired sociology prof Jim Reynolds and campus arboretum committee member Tom Hoffmann waxed eloquently about their old campus friend: “This wonderful Hackberry tree has been a silent witness, provider and benefactor to the WSU community for more than a century. How fortunate the WSU community has been to have this grand old tree as a friend.”
