ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Bond was set at $1 million for the Albert Lea man accused of wounding a police officer and two other men during a nine-hour stand-off Sunday morning. Bail was set after charges were read to Devin Matthew Weiland, 21, at an arraignment before Judge Ross Leuning. The charges: First-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault. The $1 million bail was recommended by David Walker, who as county attorney is prosecuting the case. Weiland was represented by public defender Grant Sanders, who acknowledged the seriousness of the charges but asked for a lesser bond of $250,000. Sanders said Weiland was hardly a flight risk, noting that he grew up in the area — Fairmont and Mankato — and has family in Albert Lea. Sanders noted too that Weiland’s only criminal record was for disorderly conduct. Judge Leuning responded she would review the bail at a hearing December 10.
